Residency as Witness: SFAI 2014-2021

Residency as Witness: SFAI 2014-2021
December 9-February 10
10am-6pm Wednesdays and Thursdays

This exhibition reflects current work of regional and local alumni of the SFAI Thematic Residency from 2014-2021, including themes such as Food Justice, Immigration/Emigration, Water Rights, Equal Justice, Truth & Reconciliation, and Labor.

In 2014, SFAI initiated thematic residencies in response to an increasing number of artists seeking to deepen their practice and critical engagement with important social issues. The theme and the guiding questions contextualize process and are intended to be catalysts for critical inquiry and cultural exchange. They provide a unique framework for diverse individuals – working in various media and disciplines nationally and internationally – to foster mutual understanding and connections that help support and enrich their practice.

The thematic investigation is critically developed by SFAI staff and board each year as a deepening of a prior year’s investigation, collective body of work, and current events. For instance, the 2020-21 Labor theme cohort have largely focused on the value of labor – invisible, essential, and emotional labor, as well as labor’s relationship to human rights and larger financial, legal, and political systems.
