Desierto Mountain Time is a constellation of contemporary arts organizations in the Southwestern United States and  Northern Mexico drawn together by our shared interest in making meaningful connections between local and international  communities. Together, we are offering a series of thematic conversations with artists, educators, curators, activists, and  arts administrators whose dynamic practices integrate cross-border, regional, and global issues.

Santa Fe Art Institute is the host for an online conversation on Saturday, February 19, 2022 featuring artists Marie  Alarcón, Nansi Guevara, and Nikesha Breeze, who activate the intersections between diasporic communities, cultures and  places to forge sites of resistance and sources of power. Their diverse creative practices transcend borders and nationalities  as well as intergenerational histories of colonialism and systemic oppression, while uplifting human relationships to the  earth and more-than-human world to invoke collective healing and imagine a future centered in liberation and belonging.

Desierto Mountain Time es una constelación de organizaciones que trabajan desde el arte contemporáneo en el suroeste de Estados Unidos y el norte de México unidas por un interés compartido en generar conexiones significativas entre comunidades locales e internacionales. Actualmente estamos ofreciendo una serie de charlas con artistas, educadores, curadores, activistas y gestores culturales cuyas prácticas integran temas regionales, transfronterizos y globales.

Este sábado 19 de febrero del 2022, el Santa Fe Art Institute ofrecerá una charla en línea con las artistas Marie Alarcón, Nansi Guevara y Nikesha Breeze, quienes activan intersecciones entre lugares, culturas y comunidades diaspóricas para forjar sitios de resistencia y fuentes de poder. Sus prácticas trascienden fronteras y nacionalidades así como la historia transgeneracional del colonialismo y su opresión sistemática, al mismo tiempo celebran las relaciones humanas con la tierra y el mundo más-que-humano para fomentar procesos de sanación colectiva e imaginar un futuro de liberación y pertenencia.

Panelists / Panelistas

Marie Alarcón (RAiR 2021–22 Resident) is a multimedia artist based in Philadelphia, PA. She has a B.A. in Non-Fiction  Filmmaking and Post Colonial Studies from The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA, and a Masters of Fine Arts with  a Certificate in Time Based Media, from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Art and Design. Alarcón has worked  in community media as an educator and producer through Scribe Video Center, as well as being a teaching artist for  numerous arts and educational organizations in Philadelphia, PA, Olympia, WA, and Portland OR. Alarcón’s work is inspired  by liminality, hybridity and the way that cinema functions as collective memory. Using digital manipulation and animation  in her work, she is interested in digital/analog hybrids that reclaim a tactile relationship to the hyper-real. Her relationship  to environment and place is informed by psychogeography, and notions of place and its production.

Nikesha Breeze (516 ARTS and NMSU University Art Museum 2022 Exhibiting Artist), originally from Portland, Oregon, lives  and works in the high desert of New Mexico. She is an American born African Diaspora descendant of the Mende People  of Sierra Leone, and Assyrian American Immigrants from Iran. Breeze’s interdisciplinary work reimagines the possibility  of healing inter-generational traumatic inheritance through the intersection of art and ritual. Black, Brown, Indigenous,  Queer and Earth bodies, material and immaterial, are seen as undeniably sacred and inviolable. Her work centers Black  bodies, simultaneously existing within realms of past, present, and future. She uses performance art, film, painting, textiles,  sculpture, and site-specific engagement to build a counter-narrative of an Otherwise, where Black bodies and ideas are  seen as existing in hypervalue, a realm of indivisibility between Black artistic aesthetic, Black time, and ritual healing. Black  pasts become re-informed by Black futures, and the resulting present is experienced as a living altar and artifact.

Nansi Guevara (SFAI 2022 Revolution Resident) is a designer, artist, and teacher based in Brownsville, Texas. Originally  from Laredo, Texas, she holds a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in Design from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master’s in  Education from Harvard University. She is currently focused on design, education, and community public art to create  spaces of resistance and affirmation, and economies of community cultural wealth and support. She is a graphic designer,  an illustrator, and a textile/rasquache based public artist. She runs her own freelance design & education practice, Corazón  Contento, based out of Brownsville, Texas. She is an adjunct lecturer at the School of Art at the University of Texas Rio  Grande Valley. Guevara has been awarded residencies, fellowships, and grants from the NEA, Artplace America, a Blade of  Grass, NALAC, and most recently the Santa Fe Art Institute Revolution Residency.

Marie Alarcón (Residente de RAiR 2021–22) es una artista multimedia que reside en Philadelphia, PA. Tiene una licenciatura en Cinematografía Documental y Estudios PostColoniales por The Evergreen State College en Olympia, WA, y una Maestría en Bellas Artes con un Certificado en Medios Basados en el Tiempo obtenidos en la Escuela de Arte y Diseño de la Universidad de Pennsylvania. Alarcón ha trabajado en medios comunitarios como educadora y productora a través del Scribe Video Center, y también ha fungido como artista-educadora en muchas organizaciones artísticas y educativas en Philadelphia, PA; Olympia, WA y Portland, OR. El trabajo de Alarcón se inspira en la liminalidad, la hibridación y las formas en las que el cine funciona como una memoria colectiva. Utiliza la manipulación digital y la animación en su trabajo para explorar híbridos análogo-digitales que recuperan una relación táctil con lo hiperreal. Su relación con el espacio y el medio ambiente ha sido informada por la psicogeografía y nociones de la producción del lugar.

Nikesha Breeze (Exhibe en 516 ARTS y NMSU University Art Museum durante el 2022), es originaria de Portland, Oregón, pero vive y trabaja en el desierto de Nuevo México. Es descendiente  diaspórica  del pueblo Mende de Sierra León y de migrantes Assirio Americanos de Irán. Su trabajo reimagina la posibilidad de sanar herencias intergeneracionales de trauma a través de la intersección entre el arte y el ritual. Los cuerpos negros, cafés, nativos, cuir y terrenales son vistos como infalibles e innegablemente sagrados. Su trabajo se enfoca en cuerpos Negros existiendo simultáneamente entre el pasado, el presente y el futuro. Utiliza el performance, el cine, la pintura, los textiles, la escultura y activaciones in-situ para generar la narrativa del “Por lo Contrario”,  en la que los cuerpos y las ideas Negras existen de forma hipervaluada en un estado indivisible entre la estética artística Negra, la era Negra y la sanación ritualista. Los pasados Negros son reconsiderados a partir de los futuros Negros y el presente se recorre como un altar y un artefacto vivo.

Nansi Guevara (Residente de SFAI “Revolución” 2022) es una diseñadora, artista y educadora que reside en Brownsville, Texas. Es originaria de Laredo, Texas y obtuvo una licenciatura en Bellas Artes del Diseño por la Universidad de Texas en Austin y una Maestría en Educación por Harvard. Actualmente se enfoca en el diseño, la educación y el arte público comunitario para generar espacios de afirmación y resistencia, así como economías basadas en la riqueza cultural y el apoyo comunitario. Es diseñadora gráfica, ilustradora y artista pública del textil rascuache. Dirige Corazón Contento,  su propio despacho de diseño y educación ubicado en  Brownsville, Texas. Es catedrática en la Escuela de Arte de la Universidad de Texas en Río Grande Valley. Guevara ha sido acreedora de  becas, apoyos y estancias por parte de la NEA, Artplace America,  Blade of Grass, NALAC, y recientemente la estancia Revolution del  Santa Fe Art Institute.
