Santa Fe Art Institute is re-launching our Tilt podcast as a video series. This year's focus is on our residency theme: Changing Climate. Tilt, Episode 1 "𝐼𝒻 𝓌𝒶𝓉𝑒𝓇 𝒸𝑜𝓊𝓁𝒹 𝓉𝒶𝓁𝓀, 𝓌𝒽𝒶𝓉 𝓌𝑜𝓊𝓁𝒹 𝓈𝒽𝑒 𝓈𝒶𝓎” premieres May 16th on our website

Introducing our 2023 SFAI Changing Climate Session

Introducing our 2023 SFAI Changing Climate Session Three artist-in-residents. From activist to ecologist to artist alike their practices intersect with this years theme: ᴄʜᴀɴɢɪɴɢ ᴄʟɪᴍᴀᴛᴇ. Their practices are concerned with environmental justice, planetary health, ecology, and cultural memory.

Our ᴄʜᴀɴɢɪɴɢ ᴄʟɪᴍᴀᴛᴇ Thematic Residency, is a monthly residency that orbits around frameworks of creative activism, and community art actions related to global warming that inspire individual transformation and inform collective action.

Our open call for use of our Gale Community Galler

Our open call for use of our Gale Community Gallery aims to provide equal access to artists, collectives, or non-profits in need of temporary space. Space offerings include:

🌀more sky
🌀mini fridge & microwave
🌀several natural & artificial light fixtures
🌀wet sink
🌀galvanized magnet board (8 ft x 12 ft)
🌀rolling workbench (8 ft x 4 ft x 2.5 ft)
🌀various storage closets + drawers
🌀and lastly curtains to preserve a certain view.

Flavia D’Urso (she/her) - Embodied Geology artist

Flavia D’Urso (she/her) - Embodied Geology artist in residence with @_erratics

Flavia’s practice comprises sculpture, installation, and video to create hybrid bodily forms surrounding queerness, myth-making, and animality.

While at SFAI, Flavia experimented with found materials from the New Mexico landscape along with clay, horse hair, and other materials to create a sculptural installation of non-functional tools surrounding the presence of ash and human interactions with it.

Surrounding the pedestal base is a sprinkling layer of ash. A second smaller black pedestal is finger painted with white paint and a terra cotta vessel with four small handles sits on top.

Stacey Villalobos - Embodied Geology Artist in-Res

Stacey Villalobos - Embodied Geology Artist in-Residence with @_erratics

Stacey Villalobos (they/them/elle) is a bilingual cultural worker and interdisciplinary artist based in the Mojave desert of Southern California. Their interdisciplinary art practice currently involves performance, video, photography and covers themes surrounding ecology, relationships, and cultural practices.

Throughout their time at SFAI, Stacey has experimented with embodied voice practices that include movement, and has visited nearby geological formations to play with resonance in canyons and dance in collaboration with the Santa Fe winds.

While in residence, they have shared "Una cucharada de azucar para el susto" with cohort members, which is an ongoing performance piece that transforms in response to the history, resonance & environment in which it is performed.

The ᴇʀʀᴀᴛɪᴄs project has been in residence with us

The ᴇʀʀᴀᴛɪᴄs project has been in residence with us for the past two weeks! Members of ᴇʀʀᴀᴛɪᴄs will be taking over our instagram feed for the next three days! They'll offer us a glimpse into their individual practices.

ᴇʀʀᴀᴛɪᴄs is a collaborative curatorial project that explores geologic and human intimacy. Through exhibitions, podcasts, publications, and research intensives, Erratics amplifies interdisciplinary creative research methodologies that disrupt the colonial and extractive histories of geosciences. Their goal is to generate opportunities for thinkers and makers to foster empathetic responses towards changing ecologies and planetary shifts.

Embodied Geology is a curated residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute, organized by ᴇʀʀᴀᴛɪᴄs, from April 12-26, 2023. This 2-week experimental residency occurs in conjunction with SFAI’s thematic residency program, “Changing Climate.” They have invited 6 additional artists to explore ways that sensorial, embodied methods are conduits into the often opaque realm of earth science, creating space for the geophysical, artistic, and somatic fields to coalesce. This residency is part of ᴇʀʀᴀᴛɪᴄs' larger process in which they hope to generate creative research and connections for potential future publications and exhibitions.

On this day we are remember the Fall 2010 when the Santa Fe Art Institute, in coordination with Bill McKibben’s 350.org, led the New Mexico “Flash Flood for a Living River” project, which was one of five U.S. sites out of 18 global locations.

Joining forces with an incredible list of more than 40 community partners, SFAI recruited 3,000 community members to carry and flip blue-painted recycled cardboard to compose a visual “Flash Flood” in the dry bed of the Santa Fe River, which has been designated as one of America’s most endangered rivers. The art action and aerial design was visible and documented from outer space via satellite, from the air.

🌿 Speak to jurisdiction and the ability to self-govern
🌿 Explore various concepts around sovereignty, including land and treaty rights, cultural appropriation, gender and bodily autonomy, ethnolinguistics and language revitalization, and control over the dissemination and governance of content
🌿 Explore interdependencies or divisions which change sovereign relationships.
