Irene Villaseñor
Irene Villaseñor (Aeta, Chinese, Ifugao, and Purépecha) examines art and culture, bi-societal experiences, Indigeneity, injustice, community-building, care, and trauma. She’s been (or still is) an artist, administrator, advocate for survivors of violence, educator, intrapreneur, organizer, training institute director, writer, and family caregiver. She has also co-produced award-winning documentaries, including works commissioned by the Brooklyn Museum and New Museum of Contemporary Art. It’s resulted in receiving the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice’s Women We Love, Women We Honor Award; Catalog for Giving’s Urban Hero Award; and being part of the team at American Documentary | P.O.V. that received a MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions.
Her writing appears in Queer Nature: An Ecoqueer Poetry Anthology, My Phone Lies to Me: Fake News Poetry Workshops as Radical Digital Media Literacy, Nepantla: An Anthology Dedicated to Queer Poets of Color, decomp journal, Jelly Bucket, Journal of Latina Critical Feminism, Longleaf Review, Nat. Brut, NonBinary Review, Santa Fe Writers Project’s Quarterly Journal, The Yellow Medicine Review, and elsewhere. She’s received support from the Atlantic Center for the Arts, Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, Lambda Literary, Lighthouse Writers Workshop, and New York Foundation for the Arts. Irene has read her work at the Museum of the City of New York, New School, 2022 Whitney Biennial. She is an advisor to National Museums Northern Ireland and a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Advisory Committee on Cultural Engagement.
