Cristiana de Marchi

Cristiana de Marchi (b. Italy) is a visual artist and writer who lives and works in Beirut and Dubai. She received her MFA with honours in Archaeology from The University of Turin, Italy and previously completed her Bachelors with honours in Humanities from the same university. Cristiana works with video and textiles as her privileged medium to explore issues related to identity, displacement, belonging and the porous borders that separate regions, while allowing contact.

Her solo shows include “La Sindrome di Penelope” (Fusion Art Gallery, Turin, 2017); “Wunderkammern Effimere” (Circuiti Dinamici, Milan, 2017), “Contrappunti/Counterpoints”, Villa Amoretti, Turin (2014); “My Country”, New York University, New York, USA (2014); “Weaving Gaps”, 1×1 art gallery, Dubai, UAE (2013). Cristiana has collaborated with Emirati artist Mohammed Kazem in “The Illusion of Summer” (Reed Gallery, DAAP, University of Cincinnati, 2019). with Italian artist Alberto Magrin in “Coincidenze” (Villa Brentano, Busto Garolfo, Milan, 2018), with Kuwaiti artist Monira Al Qadiri in “Melting the Sky” (1×1 art gallery, Dubai, 2016) and recently with Italian artist Dado Schapira in “Double Thread” (Villa Brentano, Busto Garolfo, Milan, 2019).

Her writing has appeared in local and international catalogues and magazines devoted to contemporary art.

Her first poetry book Embodying has been published by Sharjah Art Foundation in 2016.

Cristiana has been a resident artist at the University of Cincinnati (2018-19); Vermont Studio Centre (2018); Artists’ Village, Yinchuan, China (2016); Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Santa Fe Art Institute, USA (2014); The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, USA (2012).

In 2015, de Marchi was awarded the Italian “Premio ORA” and in 2017 her work received the “Best 15 Award” and the “Best Independent Artist Award” at Paratissima, Turin, Italy.

She is a graduate of the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship.
