Exhibition Talk: Luis Garay & Khristan Villela PhD in Conversation

Join us as Khristaan Villela, Ph.D, and Nicaraguan artist Luis Garay discuss Garay’s contemporary works on Popol Vuh & Quetzalcoatl in relationship to the Latin American immigration experience.
Scholar and Professor of Art History Dr. Villela has focused his studies on the art of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and Pre-Colombian studies. His dissertation, Montezuma’s Dinner, addresses the history of Pre-Columbian art and nationalism in early nineteenth century Mexico.
Luis Garay was born in 1965 in Granada, Nicaragua. Costa Rica was Luis’s home from 1983 until 1988, when he emigrated to Toronto, Canada, to work on his career as an artist. He has been called one of the best young Latin American illustrators working today. In addition to other awards, his book The Long Road received the award for Best International Illustrated Children and Young Adult Book of the Year, and the Achievement Award from the Institute of Nicaraguan Culture.
