Paul Sta. Ana
PAUL STA. ANA is a published poet, an awardwinning screenwriter, television and film director who graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Philosophy and a Dean’s Award for the Arts, the highest non-academic award given to a graduating student. He is an alumnus of the Berlinale Talents, which is the talent development program of the Berlin International Film Festival. As a filmmaker, his art and praxis encompass a range of themes, including gender politics, the commodification of death, and ecology.
A visionary Filipino filmmaker, Sta. Ana is celebrated for his diverse contributions to Philippine television and cinema. With over 20 locally produced series, his directorial finesse has made a lasting impact on Philippine television. Moreover, his screenplays/shows have earned acclaim, receiving nominations and awards from prestigious institutions like the Young Critics’ Circle and the Metro Manila Film Festival, as well as international recognition at the Tokyo International Film Festival and the 2013 International Emmys.
Beyond his creative endeavors, Sta. Ana passionately mentors emerging talent and advocates for fair treatment within the Filipino film community. As a founding member of the Filipino Screenwriters Guild, he champions initiatives to support aspiring writers. His global engagement, including participation in programs like Berlinale Talents and Produire au Sud in Nantes, France, underscores his commitment to collaboration and skill development.
With a diverse background in multimedia and a thematic focus on social justice and environmental advocacy, Sta. Ana continually expands the boundaries of Filipino cinema. His narratives resonate locally and internationally, solidifying his reputation as a pioneering force in Philippine filmmaking.
