Safe Space: A Queer Spell Manifesto

Please join artist in residence Andrés Senra for this workshop, collective performance, and art installation.
We invite LGBTIQ+ adults to reflect on the essence of a safe space for our community and for ourselves as individuals. Participants will explore the personal, political, social, and economic elements necessary for the existence of these spaces, and will create wishes and powerful spells through the making of artistic talismans — painted banners and signs — to express what a safe space means to each of us, as well as the demands we are making to bring it into existence.
Through artistic collaboration, participants will:
- Reflect on the meaning of a safe space within both private and public spheres.
- Create a powerful message that embodies our vision of safety.
- Express this message on individual banner-paintings (a hybrid form blending artistic expression, a talisman, a sigil and LGBTIQ+ activism).
Participants will create:
- Banner-paintings-talismans-
sigils: Combining text and painting to express their message. - Empowering self-portrait photographs: Each one holding their banner.
- Video performance pieces: Each participant, as part of a video performance and video portrait, holds their banner and casts their spell in a spot within the city, bringing the wish for a safe space into the public sphere.
The final performance-installation will include these works.
Media Consent: All participants must consent to being photographed and filmed throughout the workshop and during the performance.
