Jo Stodgel is an artist, builder and educator based in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains north of Santa Fe. He was born and raised in Santa Fe and is a graduate of Santa Fe High School and the New Mexico Academy of Healing Arts. After high school and a life-changing trip to Indonesia with the Santa Fe-based Bali Art Project he embarked on a series of backpacking journeys around the world.

His higher education includes a year studying at the University of Hawaii Manoa campus, semesters at the Findhorn Ecovillage in Scotland and the Auroville Community in Tamil Nadu, India, and the Holistic Science Masters program at Schumacher College in Devon, UK. In 2012, for his dissertation work at Schumacher he spent 3 months in South Africa setting up the Trash to Treasure Festival on the edge of an open dumpsite in partnership with the Greyton Transition Town.

After returning to New Mexico in 2014 from an entrepreneurial fellowship in Brooklyn with the Hamburg-based DO School, Jo founded Upcycle Santa Fe LLC to address and develop open-source solutions to the international plastic crisis in his hometown. The project has since been rebranded to Plan 4 Plastic and will eventually be established as a nonprofit educational organization. He wishes to share the word far and wide that yes, there are grassroots solutions for plastic pollution.

In his free time Jo can be found carving spoons, fly fishing on the local streams and lakes, building things out of reclaimed materials, or using his cherished acequia water rights to water his fruit trees.
