Linda Dittmar

Linda Dittmar grew up in Israel (1939-60), where she was drafted into the military and attended the Hebrew University. In the U.S. since 1961, she worked in NYC’s famed Public Library and attended City College before moving to Stanford University, where she got her BA, MA, and Ph.D. in English Literature. Now Professor Emerita at the University of Massachusetts–Boston, she taught literature and film for forty years. Dittmar had two Fulbright grants to India (one as Distinguished Chair) and taught at Tel Aviv University and the University of Paris. At UMB she was awarded the Chancellor’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching. Her academic writing includes the books From Hanoi to Hollywood; The Vietnam War in American Film and Multiple Voices in Feminist Film Criticism as well as many book chapters and articles. It also includes extensive service for the Society of Cinema Studies (where she chaired the Program Committee and a Task Force on Race) and years of service as manuscript editor on Radical Teacher magazine’s editorial Board. Her current memoir-in progress, “Tracing Homelands: A Memoir of Israel’s Becoming,” concerns the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. This new work won her two writing fellowships (at VSC and WISC) and saw several excerpts published.
