Community Workshop: Stitchin Freedom

Stitchin Freedom: Collective Handiwork for Involuntary Baptisms

This interactive hand-sewing workshop invites participants to take part in the creation of Involuntary Baptism, a collaborative textile installation exploring color, community, and collective consciousness in the context of liberation, repair, and remembering. Guided by 2025 SFAI Community of Practice Artist-in-Residence Tintawi Kaigziabiher, participants will hand-stitch fabric hands that will be joined into a larger collective canvas, symbolizing the African Diaspora tradition of layin’ hands to heal and transform.

Rooted in liberation-centered art practice, this session offers space for reflection on how the physical act of stitching can serve as both remembrance and repair. As we sew, we will consider the layered meanings of touch in the African diaspora.

All materials are provided, and no prior sewing experience is necessary. Participants are encouraged to bring an openness to dialogue, process, and shared making.

Free and Open to the Public
