Sweet Land:
New American Mythologies
SFAI presents a conversation with Raven Chacon, SFAI 2011 Alum, and Cannupa Hanska Luger, 2018 Story Maps Fellowship Mentor, about The Industry’s latest experimental production “Sweet Land”, an opera about colonialism that rewrites the American mythos. This podcast is a 3-part series.
PART 1 — In our first episode of Sweet Land, we hear from Raven and Cannupa about how they met, the collaborative experience of working together on Sweet Land, stepping into a new art form, and how their experience and perspectives influenced the project.
PART 2 — In this episode, Raven and Cannupa describe the structural aspects of Sweet Land, the alternative narratives the opera constructs around the story of America, and the significance of its location in the Los Angeles State Historical Park.
PART 3 — In this episode, Raven and Cannupa ponder the role of monuments and public art in American life as it relates to our understanding of history, mainstream narratives, and current events. They also discuss their own roles as mentors and role models for younger artists, and the future of art in a time of rapid global change.
