Community Event: Introduction to Community Critique Circle

Artist Community Critique Circle

Join us for an informational session introducing a new monthly program designed to support local artists through structured peer feedback and professional development. This gathering offers an opportunity to learn about our Community Critique Circle approach, meet facilitator Doza Mendoza (SFAI 2025 Community of Practice alum), and discover how you can participate beginning February 2026.

Our monthly Community Critique Circle creates space for artists to cultivate meaningful connections, engage in creative exchange, and access guidance from curators, cultural workers, and fellow artists. This initiative extends our commitment to supporting critical dialogue beyond our residency programming, offering a focused way to connect with your local creative community.

Meeting every second Tuesday evening of the month starting in February 2026, each session will feature:

  • Artist Presentations: A few participants share works in progress for critical feedback and dialogue
  • Structured Feedback: Practice with the Critical Response Process

During this information session, you’ll be introduced to the Critical Response Process, a proven method devised by Liz Lerman in 1990 for giving and receiving feedback on creative work in progress. This approach is designed to leave makers energized and motivated to continue their work.

Through four supportive core steps, the Process combines thoughtful questioning with informed dialogue, giving artists an active role in discussing their own work. It strengthens how we think, communicate, and engage with one another—skills that enhance artistic collaboration, professional relationships, and creative community building.
