My name is Cedric Tai, I’m an un-disciplinary artist born in Detroit, currently residing in LA (Tongva/Chumash/Kizh land.)
I think through sculpture, talking, writing, performance and experimental exhibitions.
My conceptual work focuses on neurodivergent experience, labor, and politics.
I’ve partnered with neuroscientists, academics from critical psychiatry, artist collectives, disability justice social media influencers, and somatic therapists to co-create accessible resources particularly around mental health and queer anti-capitalist liberation.
Some of my work is setup systematically (coding/spreadsheets/workshops/repetition) so that I can focus on the spontaneous and experimental way I can engage with the audience.
Examples:
– ‘Brixels’ tesselations
– My reverse-pick-pocketing workshops
– The list of artists for “They Didn’t Go”.
Other works are like love letters, or are intentionally not efficient, wherein I come to know someone/something through immersing myself in an intimate process.
Examples:
– “Indirectly Yours” where another conceptual artist installed a years worth of my sculptures with carte blanche to display/alter/destroy as their solo show
– Currently, my ‘Neuroqueer Film Workshops’ where participants each edit their own version so it exists in multitudes.
A friend remarked I’m ‘Pathologically Curious’, a lovely way to describe how my Autism/ADHD re-frames shame into wonder, absurdity, meaningful challenges, and joyful interdependence.
