SFAI Design for Good Lecture

Design for Good: Lecture & Discussion with Michael Murphy & John Cary

Join us for a lecture and conversation about how design excellence can heal, promote equal justice, and bring about lasting social change with Michael Murphy of MASS Design Group and with John Cary of Design for Good. Jamie Blosser, SFAI Executive Director, and Joseph Kunkel, Executive Director of the Sustainable Native Communities Collaborative and SFAI Board Member, will introduce and moderate the conversation. After the conversation, Design for Good: A New Era of Architecture for Everyone will be available for sale along with a book signing by John Cary. SFAI Equal Justice residents will also open their studios open for viewing and conversation.

 

ABOUT MICHAEL MURPHY

Michael Murphy is the Executive Director of MASS Design Group, which he co-founded in 2008. Michael leads design and research programs at MASS and has overseen the expansion of MASS into ten countries on three continents. MASS’s work has been recognized globally with awards such as the 2017 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Architecture, The Architectural League of New York’s Emerging Voices Award, the Curry Stone Design Prize and as finalists for The Aga Khan Award for Architecture. MASS has also been published widely, with recent projects featured in Architectural Record, CNN and The New York Times. Michael’s 2016 TED talk has reached over a million views and he gives lectures frequently to audiences around the globe. Michael holds a Master in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, and is an SFAI Equal Justice resident.

 

ABOUT JOHN CARY

An architect by training, John Cary has devoted his career to expanding the practice of design for the public good. John’s writing appears in The New York Times, on CNN.com, and in numerous other publications; his latest book is titled Design for Good: A New Era of Architecture for Everyone. With a foreword by Melinda Gates, the book showcases 20 building projects from around the world, including several by MASS Design Group. John makes the case that everyone deserves good design by celebrating design centered around compassion, empathy, and dignity. John completed his graduate work at UC Berkeley, is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome, a resident of the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center, and an SFAI alumni.
