madison moore

madison moore (b. 1982, Ferguson, Missouri; lives and works in Richmond, VA) is an interdisciplinary artist-scholar working across performance, DJ culture, sound, video and interactive experience. His research-based practice is focused on how queer and trans communities of color configure joy, excess, fashion, movement and sound to thrive and build community in spite of the ever present threat of annihilation. He is assistant professor of Queer Studies in the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. madison is the author of Fabulous: The Rise of the Beautiful Eccentric (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2018), a cultural analysis of the value of fabulousness for queer and trans people of color. As a DJ, he has performed internationally in the “underground” queer techno community and is currently working on a debut EP of electronic music. He has also delivered performance lectures at the Perth Festival, The School of Life Melbourne, Performance Space Sydney, American Realness, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Sound Arts Visiting Practitioners series at the London College of Communication. madison is currently working on a mixed-media project focused on ephemeral traces, rave scenes and queer of color undergrounds. He holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale University.
