Kandis Friesen

Kandis Friesen’s work is anchored in diasporic language, dispersed translations, and disintegrating archival forms. Drawing on Russian Mennonite, Ukrainian, and former Soviet geographies, her interdisciplinary compositions build from architectural, material, and spectral inhabitations of exile, amplifying minute and myriad histories at once. Her work has been presented at LUX (London), Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago), FIFA (Montréal), Workers Arts & Heritage Centre (Hamilton), Traverse Vidéo (Toulouse), Jihlava IDFF (Jihlava), and Athens Digital Arts Festival (Athens), among others. She has received several grants and awards, including a Canada Council for the Arts Film and Video Grant (2016), Images Festival’s Best Local Artist Award (with Nahed Mansour, 2012), and recent residencies at MAWA in Winnipeg and the CALQ-Québec Residency at The Banff Centre. Her videos are distributed by Groupe Intervention Vidéo in Montréal.
