John G

JOHN G is an illustrator, comics creator and head of Cleveland based Shiner Comics, Inc. Since the late 90s he’s been building a humble following with hundreds of ridiculous, vivid posters and illustration work for a variety of clients like Melt Bar & Grilled, Cleveland Cinemas, Scene Magazine and a multitude of local and national bands and music venues. With Jake Kelly, he creates and publishes The Lake Erie Monster, a rust-belt centered, horror anthology comic.

He co-founded and continues to run Genghis Con, an award-winning annual small press and underground comics convention in Cleveland. In 2015 TurnStyle Films debuted Draw Hard, a short documentary about John G and his work, which was selected for the 2016 Cleveland International Film Festival and took home the Jury Award for Best Ohio Short Film. In 2016 he was one of 40 artists awarded the Creative Workforce Fellowship grants by The Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC).

In 2017 John G was awarded a Creative Access Fellowship Residency from the Neilsen Foundation to attend the Vermont Studio Center. A hardcover book, Sandwich Anarchy, The Cult Culinary Posters of Melt Bar & Grilled, collecting much of his dynamic poster work for Melt has been released by 1984 Publishing. John G was also selected as the first Artist-in-Residency for the Gordon Square Arts District in the fall of 2017. In 2018 he was awarded a second Creative Access Fellowship Residency to attend PLAYA in Summer Lake, Oregon.
