Kate Jarboe
M. Wright
AK/OK is Kate Jarboe and M. Wright, an art/design collective currently based in Montreal, QC, Canada. Their work investigates marginalized histories and spaces, queer and feminist archives, and contemporary American culture and politics. Overlapping art and design practices, their work incorporates time-based media, photography, drawing, installation, and artist’s books, as well as socially engaged projects.
Their work has been exhibited and presented at Bishopsgate Institute, London; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; Brown University, Providence; California State University, Chico; Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, New York; Fernwey Gallery, Chicago; the Oakland Museum of California; Photofusion Photography Centre, London; San Francisco State University; Stockholm University of the Arts, Stockholm, Sweden; SOMA, Mexico City; and Weinberg/Newton Gallery, Chicago. Their artists’ books are distributed by Printed Matter in New York City. AK/OK’s work resides in the collections of Columbia University’s Butler Library, New York; the Allen Ginsberg Estate, New York; the GLBT Historical Society, San Francisco; the National Design Archives at the Denver Art Museum; and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History Library, Washington, DC. In support of their work, they have received grants from Harvard University, Texas State University, and the Vermont Studio Center.
Jarboe holds an MFA in Studio Art from the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU. She is the recipient of numerous fellowships and grants and a former adjunct art instructor at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX. Wright holds an MFA in Visual Communication Design from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently an associate professor of design at Concordia University, Montreal.
