Exhibition Dates: December 2, 2013 – January 15, 2014
Artist’s Lecture: Monday, December 2, 6PM @ SFAI
The Santa Fe Art Institute presents, The Unfolding Center, a singular work of art where drawings and poetry transform each other. Eleven diptychs comprised of twenty-two densely layered graphite works on paper by Susan York are interleaved into an extended, mulit-voiced poem by Arthur Sze. Together they explore, embody, and enact shifting points of tension to arrive at a liminal space where all things are possible.
Susan York is a distinguished artist who is recognized internationally for her sculpture and drawings. She was awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship and the Alpert Foundation/Ucross Residency Prize. She is currently the President’s Chair in Art as well as the head of the sculpture program at the Santa Fe University of Art & Design.
Arthur Sze is an esteemed poet and recipient of multiple honors including a Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing fellowships and an American Book Award. Sze is on the Board of Chancellors for the Academy of American poets and a professor emeritus at the Institute of American Indian Arts and he is the first poet laureate of Santa Fe.
Radius Books will pre-release a hardcover version of this project in conjunction with this exhibition that will be for sale.
