Season'08 - Reflecting on things we witness in the world around us.

We have had an incredible start to the year, with young people from all over the city digging into the dirty and rich cultural exploration of our 2008 theme OUTSIDER; Tourism, Migration, and Exile.

Students worked with visual artist Chrissie Orr on El Otra Lado a community based public art project exploring migration stories, with visual artist Sabra Moore to paint a mural exploring food and migration, they wrote songs with Paul Rivers Bailey, wrote and performed poems with Rose Simpson, Cynthia Ruffin, and Amaryllis DeJesus Moleski, made instruments and explored migration through music with Peter Willig, learned style writing with John Santos and Perish, honed drawing and painting skills with Pete Jackson, and wheat pasted two public murals with Rebekah Tarin, Amaryllis DeJesus Moleski and Johanna Kohout.

Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate the hard work and creativity of Santa Fe’s youth and the artists that have guided them throughout the semester. Exploring the ideas of OUTSIDER: Tourism, Migration, and Exile, this exhibition and performance will show you how our youth are thinking, as they explore where we have come from and where they will take us in the future.

Chrissie Orr
has a diverse and remarkable resume. She is currently an artist, anthropologist, activist, and animateur, and in the past has been a circus performer, a muralist, and the creator and director of numerous community based art projects all over the world. Orr’s vision and skills have been recognized by both the US Congress and the NEA, and she has been nominated for numerous awards for her work with youth.

JUNE 9-20

Imprinted: collographic printmaking exploring migration and exile
taught by Ron Mier
6-8 year olds: 10am - 12:30pm
9-12 year olds: 1:30 - 4pm

What we see leaves an imprint on our minds eye. Using personal and found objects, we will make collographic prints (collograph = objects collaged together to form printing plate, printed using a printing press and non toxic inks) exploring our experiences with migration and exile. Ron Mier is a printmaker and painter from Santa Fe, NM. A self taught artist, he has collaborated with other artists for eighteen years in group shows and print shop settings. The artist’s work has been displayed in studios and galleries in the United States and France.

Migration by Design: pit fired pottery
Taught by Darlene James
9-12 year olds: 10am -12:30pm

Traditional Hopi and Tewa pottery designs have been passed down for generations, and tell stories about journeys and migrations. Inspired by these traditional designs, we will explore our own ancestries; creating ceramic bowls, plates and figurines that tell our families stories. The workshop will culminate in a pit firing of our artwork! Darlene James is a member of the Hopi Nation and Tewa tribe, and began making pottery at a young age. She studied at the Institute of American Indian Art, and is a tenured artist at the Southwest American Indian Art Market.

JUNE 23 – JULY 4

Finding Home: exploration of place through painting
Taught by Ester Campos
6-8 year olds: 10am - 12:30pm

Every place has an essence of its own. Where we spend our time influences how we see the world, and how we see the world influences where we choose to spend our time. Using the painting techniques of Impressionism and Expressionism, we will explore the places and spaces that are important us. Ester Campos is a painter, sculptor, and educator. Born in Santiago Chile, she was awarded a Scholarship to attend an art school for gifted children, and was later awarded President’s Scholarship of Republic of Chile to attend the Fine Art program at University of Chile. Her work has been exhibited widely in the United States and in Chile.

Give Me My Wings! exploring the world through comics
9-12 year olds: 10am -12:30pm
6-8 year olds: 1:30 - 4pm

Comic book characters are so much a part of our lives it can be tough to remember that they don’t really exist. But comics are much more than entertainment; in fact, comics have long been used to talk about current events, politics and cultural trends (how different would your perspective be if you could fly?). In this workshop we will make our own comics: drawing from our own lives, giving ourselves the wings to go wherever we like, and laughing at ourselves along the way.

JULY 7 – 18

The Daring Book, Santa Fe style
Taught by Felicia Rose Chavez
6-8 year olds: 10am - 12:30pm
9-12 year olds: 1:30 - 4pm

In this class, we’ll write our own can-do, how-to manual about what it means to be a brave, inspired, enthusiastic, well-rounded young person growing up in Santa Fe. Do you know how to make a snowman out of tumbleweeds? Cool your tongue after eating an especially spicy green chile? What do you want to tell the tourist about where you live? We’ll create an illustrated Daring Book of our own that will show the world how to thrive in Santa Fe. Felicia Rose Chavez is a creative non-fiction writer, book artist and social entrepreneur. Born in Albuquerque, NM, she holds a B.A. in English and Community Service Studies from DePaul University, and was a program director at Young Chicago Authors. Felicia dedicates her life to deconstructing the traditional dimensions of power and creating new approaches to learning.

We Got It: found art collage
Taught by Idris Goodwin

Our surroundings give us everything we need to make beautiful art. We will gather materials from all over the place, the ground, the water, the trees, under the bench, from your home. Each piece or shard we find has its own story to tell of how it got there but when we put them all together it tells a unique story of the artist. Every day we'll start with a different theme, we'll find the right elements and get to work making our collages out of everything under the sun. Idris Goodwin is a writer, performer and visual artist coming to us from Chicago, IL. UR Chicago, named him one of the most influential people in Chicago under the age of 30.

JULY 21 – AUGUST 1

Go There! art as exploration, drawing and painting as the vehicle
Taught by Sheila Miles
6-8 year olds: 10am - 12:30pm

Great art comes from exploring and experiencing: we should approach all art as if we are traveling to a new country full of mysteries that unfold new sights, textures, sounds, colors, narratives, subjects and sensations. In this workshop we will explore migrating and traveling to a new place through painting and drawing. Students will be encouraged to dream, imagine, experience new colors, marks, shapes, and to see in a new way. Sheila Miles is a painter originally from Montana, she received both her BA and MA from Purdue University. She has exhibited widely throughout the United States, received many awards for her artwork, and has taught extensively from the elementary to university level.

Move and Express! migratory exploration through abstract expressionism
taught by Shakti Kroopkin
9-12 year olds: 10am -12:30pm
6-8 year olds: 1:30 - 4pm

Migration sometimes is a choice. Other times it is not. It can be full of joy and excitement or rife with fear and danger. Abstract expressionism frees us to explore these realities through journeys of color, line, shape and texture. We will paint to wear the shoes of movers and to explore the ways and reasons people migrate. In this workshop, the process of art-making is more important than the final piece. Shakti Kroopkin began her oil painting career at the age of seven when she attended an adult painting workshop and surprised everyone by producing "the best painting in the class." She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has been teaching and exhibiting her work nationally since.

AUGUST 4 – 15

Outsider Theatrics: performance for a new perspective
taught by Cynthia Ruffin
6-8 year olds: 10am - 12:30pm
9-12 year olds: 1:30 - 4pm

Drawing from our own experiences and life stories, we will use body movement, voice and other theatrical techniques to explore what it means to be an outsider. Why are some people outsiders and some people insiders? Are those positions written in stone, or do we create them for each other? Together, we will build a theatrical piece to be performed for friends and family. Students are encouraged to also participate in Becoming the Other mask making workshop. Cynthia Ruffin is a theatre activist, writer and educator from Montreal, Canada. She has been doing social justice work, creating theatre with performers and non-performers of all ages for over 10 years. Cynthia is always grateful for opportunities to learn from young people.

Becoming the Other: mask making for a new perspective
taught by Rebekah Tarin
9-12 year olds: 10am -12:30pm
6-8 year olds: 1:30 - 4pm

Mask making is a transformative art that has been used for centuries to change a person into someone or something else. During this workshop we will use paper mache, paint, and collage to construct masks that allow us to see the world from a different perspective. Students are encouraged to also participate in the Outsider Theatrics class, so they can explore their characters fully and create a performance with their masks. Rebekah Tarin is grateful for the opportunity to make art with young people.
