Mythological Montage
a multimedia collage and writing workshop
Taught by Gretchen Reynolds and Johanna Kohout
7/10 - 7/21, Monday - Friday, 10 am-2pm
Ages 6-12, $100.
Sliding scale fee available.

In the first week of this two week workshop, writer Gretchen Reynolds will lead the students through an exploration of mythology, from Athena to Superman. Each student will write thier own myth, focusing on character development. The second week, taught by visual artist Johanna Kohout, will turn the students into the central characters of thier mythologies. The students will photograph one another in character, and then work into their photographs with paints and collage materials. Through this workshop each student will learn the foundations of mythology, how to use visual arts to tell a story, and how to transform everyday life into a mythological adventure!

a workshop on producing comics
Taught by Enrique Martinez and the Baaadassss Comics Collective

Ages 6 and up - Intergenerational participation encouraged!, $100.

Students will explore the many dimensions of comic book production, from creating a storyline, to drawing, inking, layout design, mock-up, cut and paste, copying and typesetting, format and general book design, as well as distribution and pricing. It is an incredible feeling, to be able to publish your own book of artwork, and to tell your stories to the world.

Sock Puppets. Razzamataz Style

The Challenge: create a fantastic character using only a sock, gorgeous recycled fabrics, and other salvaged materials. The creative possibilities are endless and each sock puppet is unique.

Mr. B’s Funked-Out Banjo Experience

This is a 2-day teen & adult workshop on building funky homemade banjos/ sitars out of recycled and salvaged materials. This workshop gives each student the opportunity to design and build a fully functional musical instrument and then decorate it with a range of 2D and 3D collage techniques using materials such as: board game pieces, salvaged plastic toys, puzzles and cards, magazine cut-outs/ photos, etc. The banjos are then coated with a thick lustrous layer of crystal clear epoxy resin. The end result is a beautifully handcrafted musical instrument that is equally at home hanging in an art gallery or plugged into an amplifier producing bizarre and wonderful tones.

The magic of pop-up books is making two dimensional images come alive! This workshop will explore the art of storytelling through writing, drawing, and paper folding techniques.
