Metamorfosis Documentation Project (Armando Espinosa Prieto and Craig Johnson) is completing a collaborative project with the community of Teotitlán del Valle, a village in southern Oaxaca, to document La Danza de la Pluma (The Feather Dance). In the last phase of this Project, Metamorfosis Documentation Project will bring the current dance group, Grupo de Promesa 2007 – 2009, from Teotitlán de Valle to New Mexico to present this traditional dance.

In accordance with our mission to – “create opportunities for communities in the United States to experience an inside look at cultures and community rituals markedly different from their own. We hope to stimulate these audiences to reflect on and more fully appreciate their own cultures and to foster respect and support for all cultures and traditions while highlighting their historic position in our modern world”,  Metamorfosis Documentation Project will be bringing “La Danza de la Pluma” to New Mexico.

The current dance pledge group “Grupo de Promesa 2007-2009” will be dancing in Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Socorro.

  • Saturday, July 18th – The group will present the Dance at 11 AM in the event “Viva Mexico!” to take place at El Rancho las Golondrinas in Santa Fe. This event is co-organized by the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque.
  • Sunday, July 19th – The group will present the Dance in the community plaza at “Tierra Contenta” in Santa Fe. In this event the documentary “La Danza de la Pluma; Fe, Sacrificio y Tradición” will be shown previous to the dance along with an audio-visual talk (with participation of the dancers) about the culture and the history of the dance. Tierra Contenta is an affordable housing development in the south side of Santa Fe; a community with large populations of Hispanics and Mexican immigrants. This free admission event, beginning at 1 PM,  will attempt to create a wider sense of community, history and cultural preservation.
