Site-Specific Playwriting: Writing Performance Pieces For The City of Santa Fe

Taught by Timothy Braun, SFAI writer in residence
July 10, 17, 24-25, 10am-2pm
In celebration of the 400th anniversary of Santa Fe, students will study the basic concepts of playwriting focusing on a specific location. Each student will have a one-act play completed by the end of the class.

Digital Storytelling for Non-Filmmakers

Taught by Deborah Fort, independent digital media artist and teacher
July 30, 5:30-8:30pm, July 31, 9am-5pm, August 1, 1-4pm

Storytelling has become an essential 21st century skill. Expensive and daunting digital equipment is not necessary to create a compelling story. In this exciting workshop participants will use whatever equipment is available to collect images and sound. This could be a cell phone, digital still camera, a video camera, web cam or any combination of devices. Then using available software (iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, Final Cut, Premiere, Power Point) participants will create their projects.

Audio Revolution!

Taught by the Youth Media Project & Santa Fe Art Institute
August 2-13th, 10am-4pm

This summer, Santa Fe Art Institute, Youth Media Project and the College of Santa Fe will collaborate on an intensive, two-week workshop introducing the tools of multimedia production to a team of young people. Workshop participants will develop skills in creating personal narratives, community interviewing, digital recording and editing. Students will record their own voices, spoken work pieces, and songs for reaching online and radio audiences interested in youth perspectives and artistic expression.

Fresh and Hot Off The Press: Silk Screening

Taught by Saba of the Trillion Space Art Gallery
July 2-3, 1-4pm

Come design and print your own original t-shirt. Learn the steps of designing, creating screens and printing the image with a professional printer.

Popping and Locking

Taught by Guadalupe Vargas, SFAI teaching artist
July 6-9, 1-4pm

Popping and Locking is a dance style and one of the original funk styles coming out of California in the 70’s. It is based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancers body. Students will have four exciting afternoons of learning this element of the hip-hop culture.

Portfolio Development for High School Students

Taught by Deanne Brown, SFAI Youth Education and Outreach Director
July 12-23, 1-4pm

Are you interested in applying to art school and obtaining scholarships? Come spend two weeks developing skills and creating works in SFAI’s beautiful studios. Projects are designed to enhance observational skills and creative thinking. Students will have the opportunity to participate in critiques with professional artist and college faculty. Learn what admissions councilors are looking for in a portfolio and learn how to present yours!
Ideal for students ages 16-20, $200

Hip Hop Workshops

Taught by Guadalupe Vargas, SFAI teaching artist
Every Tuesday 4:30-6:30

Come to SFAI every Monday for free art and performance workshops. These workshops explore all elements of the hip hop culture. Participants will learn graffiti, DJ/ mixing, and break dancing. Participants will have the opportunity to design and paint large public murals in the DeVargas skateboard park.
Ideal for students ages 10 and up. FREE
